Privacy policy
Plain English, like the forecast. Get Frothin’ is built to collect as little as possible, and you can delete everything yourself.
Last updated 3 October 2026.
The short version
- You can use Get Frothin’ without an account, an email or a password.
- We only store something on our server when you do something: check in, log a session, post, add a board or turn on alerts.
- We don’t sell your data, and sponsors never get it.
- You can delete everything yourself at any time: You → Edit → Delete my data.
What we collect and why
Only what each feature needs to work:
| What | Where it’s kept | Who can see it | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your name, level, region and settings | This phone (and your profile on our server once you have an account) | Your name and level are shown next to what you share | Until you change or delete them |
| Check-ins (break, time, optional note and board) | Our database | Everyone, or only your crew if you choose "crew only" | Shown for 12 hours; kept for your session history until you delete it |
| Session ratings and forecast conditions | Our database | Used without names or ids to tune the forecast | Until you delete your data |
| Keen plans | Our database | Everyone, or only your crew | Shown until 2 hours after the planned time |
| Live look photos | Our photo storage | Everyone | Shown for 6 hours, deleted after 24 hours |
| Tips, reports and shakas | Our database | Everyone (tips and reports show your first name) | Until you delete them or your data |
| Profile photo | This phone; our photo storage only if you choose to show it | Everyone, only if you turn it on | Until you remove it |
| Your quiver (boards and board photos) | Our database and private photo storage | Only you | Until you delete them |
| Crew links, requests and invite codes | Our database | Only you and the other person | Until either of you removes them; invites expire after 14 days |
| Private notes and secret spots | Our database, encrypted on your phone first | Only you: we only hold scrambled text we can’t read | Until you delete them |
| Milestones | This phone and our database | Only you | Until you delete your data |
| Alert subscription (a push address from your browser, your level and region) | Our database | Nobody | Until you turn alerts off |
| Tide sign-in identifier | Our database | Nobody | Until you delete your data |
If you don’t use a feature, we don’t collect anything for it. Browsing the forecast stores nothing about you on our server.
Your location
We never track where you are. The only time the app asks for your location is if you tap "Save where I am" on a secret spot, and that location is encrypted on your phone before it’s saved, so only you can read it. Check-ins only record the break you choose.
Accounts and Tide sign-in
The first time you do something that needs saving, the app creates an anonymous account: a random id, with no email or password. If you choose to sign in with Tide, Tide handles the sign-in and we receive only an identifier for your Tide account, never a password. That keeps your history and quiver on any phone. Your Tide account itself is managed by Tide under its own privacy policy.
Encryption
Private session notes and secret spots are encrypted on your phone with your Tide keys before they leave it. We store only the scrambled result and have no way to read it. Everything sent between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit (HTTPS).
Who else is involved
We use a few trusted services to run Get Frothin’. They process data only to provide their service to us:
- Supabase: our database and photo storage, hosted in Sydney, Australia.
- Cloudflare: hosts the website, and gives us privacy-friendly visitor counts (Cloudflare Web Analytics uses no cookies and doesn’t track you across sites).
- Tide: optional sign-in and encryption.
- Open-Meteo, the Queensland Government and IMOS: forecast, tide and wave buoy data. Your browser fetches some of this directly, which means those services see your IP address, like any website you visit.
- Google Fonts and jsDelivr: deliver the app’s font and a code library, and see your IP address when they do.
- Your browser’s push service (Apple, Google or Mozilla): delivers alerts if you turn them on.
Some of these companies are based overseas, so data may be processed outside Australia. We choose services with strong security and privacy commitments.
Sponsors
Get Frothin’ is free because local businesses sponsor it. A sponsor gets a clearly labelled card in the app and a link. Sponsors don’t get any information about you, and we don’t use ad trackers.
What others can see
When you check in, plan a surf, post a tip, photo or report, or show your profile photo, other people can see it with your first name and level. If you set "Who sees your check-ins and plans" to My crew only, only your crew can see your check-ins and plans. That’s enforced by our database, not just hidden in the app. Mini profiles never show where you’ve surfed.
Your choices and rights
- See and change your details: in the app under You → Edit.
- Delete everything: You → Edit → Delete my data removes your account and everything it owns, including photos, straight away. It also clears the app on that phone.
- Delete one thing: you can delete your own check-ins, plans, tips, photos, boards and secret spots at any time.
- Ask us: email support@getfrothin.com for a copy of your data, a correction, or anything else. We’ll reply within 30 days.
If you’re not happy with how we handle a privacy concern, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
Young surfers
Get Frothin’ is for surfers of all ages, but it isn’t designed for children to use on their own. If you’re under 16, please use it with a parent or guardian, and don’t post photos of yourself or other people. If you think a child has shared personal information, email us and we’ll remove it.
Security
Each person can only read and change their own private data (enforced by the database for every request), private photos are in private storage, sign-in uses Tide with device-bound tokens, and the website runs a strict security policy. No system is perfect: if we ever have a data breach that could cause you harm, we’ll tell you and the regulator as the law requires.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
